It’s most likely that your linux distro already has this package in its repository, so try installing it that way first: Ubuntu/Debian: sudo apt install smartmontools. CentOS/Fedora: yum install smartmontools.

The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and smartd) to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (SMART) built into most modern ATA/SATA, SCSI/SAS and NVMe disks.

You can install the smartmontools package from the Synaptic Package Manager (see SynapticHowto), or by typing the following into the terminal: sudo apt-get install smartmontools
