According to youtube-dl official documentation, you could try youtube-dl -U or youtube-dl --update or even sudo -H pip install --upgrade youtube-dl.

Make sure you are using the latest version; type youtube-dl -U to update. Be sure to call youtube-dl with the --verbose flag and include its complete output.

update: 2/18開始陸續發生問題#. 原因是因為youtube改版。 不過youtube-dl開發者尚未更新patch，所以下 youtube-dl -U 指令更新目前無效。

Issue seems to be solved in nightly version of youtube-dl, but that version cannot be wget-ed from yt-dl.org because of copyright issue.
